An Overview Of Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament)

Course Length: 8 weeks     Starting Time: Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010,

Ending Time: Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010.    Hours Per Session: 2 Hours.

The story of Israel’s beginnings and its relationship with  its God, Yahweh,

are chronicled in the Hebrew Scriptures.  When the early Jewish followers of

Jesus broke away from their fellow Jews, they carried with them these holy

writings and used them (and abused them) to justify their founding of their

new religion, Christianity.  Christians and Jews look at the Hebrew Scriptures

in vastly different ways.  Scholars of both faiths have worked separately and

together for  many years to unearth how the scriptures were actually written

and when, what is history and what is myth, and who the various authors

might have been and so on.

This introductory course will only cover the high lights of Israel’s history, the various myths from her ancient roots that are woven into the first books, the struggle to develop the united kingdom, the split into the northern and southern kingdoms and the exile to Babylon and the return and the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem.  This is a non-faith based course and it is based upon scientific principles and the scientific method of inquiry.
Norman Lambert received his master’s degree from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California in 1971 and teaches several comparative religion courses at the Clovis Adult Education School.
Please bring a Bible with an Old Testament or an English Version of a

Hebrew Scripture to class the first night
